They develop hybrid thermoplastic elastomers (TEH)

18 October, 2018

Increased demand for materials with higher thermal resistance, along with thermoplastic processability

Blends made from a thermoplastic material and a cross-linked elastomeric part are known as EPDM / PP blends. Although they combine elastomeric application properties with the processability of thermoplastics, limits arise when performance demands are high. For example, before a contact of the medium at high temperatures.

During the presentation of KRAIBURG TPE at the Fakuma 2018 fair to be held from October 16 to 20 in Friedrichshafen, Germany, the company will launch the new hybrid thermoplastic elastomer technology, whose specific combination and modifiability for various applications exceed the possibilities offered by the classic thermoplastic vulcanizates. To distinguish these materials from known thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) blends such as EPDM / PP, the company named the material thermoplastic elastomers hybrid (TEH).

According to Frieder Vielsack, Head of the Advanced Development Directorate at KRAIBURG TPE, TEH’s manufacturing technology can be an alternative to the respective rubber compounds. In addition, it offers attractive options for two-component applications together with technical plastics such as polyamides and thermoplastic polyesters.

Additionally, they can be processed in extrusion plants or injection molding machines commonly used, do not require any type of post-treatment and are fully recyclable. The standard colors are black and natural.

“The characteristics of these TEHs include a degree of hardness of 55 to 80 Shore A, constant operating temperatures of up to 150 ° C and resistance against oils, lubricants, fuels and coolants. The materials are intended for use in the environment of combustion engines and in the thermal management of drives and batteries for electric vehicles, as well as in lubrication and cooling systems for machines, process technology and buildings. They include seals, plugs, connectors, covers, closures and coatings ”, he highlighted.
