New smart inks and active varnishes for functional packaging printing

11 December, 2017

Aimplas, the Plastics Technological Institute, is currently developing the second year of the BACTINT project. Focused on the development of smart inks and active varnishes for functional packaging printing that add value to the product, this project already allowed during its first year to select materials and develop initial formulations that mark the starting point of the work to be carried out. you are performing on this annuity.

The work carried out in 2017 has focused on the optimization of the formulations to finally obtain a demonstrator that can be incorporated into a container. To do this, a conductive polymer has been developed that can replace metal electrodes in electronic devices and be used as a susceptor. In addition, work has been done to obtain a hybrid varnish with lighter oxygen and moisture barrier properties and with less environmental impact than conventional materials, as well as active varnishes for application as an oxygen absorber in flexible packaging for food contact . Finally, an oxygen indicator ink for direct printing on flexible packaging is being developed that allows food quality to be monitored.

The BACTINT project has the support of the Conselleria d’Economia Sostenible, Sectors Productius, Comerç i Treball de la Generalitat Valenciana through IVACE, and is co-financed by the ERDF funds of the EU, within the ERDF Operational Program of the Valencian Community 2014-2020.
