Innovative insulin device made with Topas copolymer

Valeritas ‘portable insulin delivery device V-Go features an injection molded cartridge made with Polyplastics’ Topas cyclic olefin copolymer (COC), which offers patients with type 2 diabetes a patch option that can eliminate the need for multiple daily feedings.

This device is designed to simplify insulin therapy and help make blood glucose control possible for adults. It is a simple, accessible, and completely disposable device with no electronics, batteries, or programming. It is small, lightweight and is worn under clothing.

“Topas COC plays an important role in the insulin delivery device cartridge system,” said Geoffrey Jenkins, Valeritas executive vice president of engineering and development. “We found that it is very stable in contact with the drug and has great optical clarity; in addition, it offers good injection molding characteristics with excellent dimensional stability and minimal shrinkage ”.

Unlike other engineering or glass thermoplastics, this copolymer offers a non-ionic, minimally reactive surface. Furthermore, it does not promote adsorption, denaturation, aggregation, or precipitation.
