AIMPLAS, the Technological Institute of Plastics, participates in the European EnzOx2 project, the objective of which is to develop new technologies that allow obtaining chemical components from biomass.

During the three years that the project will last, the participating centers and companies, under the coordination of the CSIC, will develop new biochemical technologies based on the use of oxidative enzymes that allow obtaining high value-added products from biomass as an alternative to raw materials of petrochemical origin.

Specifically, the production of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid is envisaged. It is a building block or chemical compound that has great interest in the polymerization process for the subsequent formulation of a derivative of Polyethylene Furanoate (PEF). This material has high performance and is a substitute for Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), with the advantage of coming from renewable sources.

AIMPLAS plays a very important role at this point in the project, as it will be responsible for validating the industrial application of the new compounds and their performance as an ingredient in the formulation of a substitute material for PET.
