AIMPLAS, together with the General Hospital of Valencia, develops realistic anatomical models to adapt surgical processes to each patient
Additive manufacturing has become a huge growth area for the medical sector. With the aim of taking advantage of the possibilities of this process, Aimplas, the Technological Institute of Plastics, is working on a comprehensive flexible 3D printing service for the planning of surgeries and for obtaining complex geometry orthoses with anatomical models.
The pieces will seek to faithfully recreate the properties and characteristics of organs, tissues and pathologies and will allow surgical planning to be carried out in multiple hospital services, fully personalized and adapted to each patient. In this way, it seeks to reduce side effects in treatments.
Aimplas collaborates in this project together with the Research Foundation of the General Hospital of Valencia (FIHGUV) and the company IT3D within the framework of the REALISTIC project, financed by the Valencian Innovation Agency (AVI).
The project proposes a pilot advanced unit that does not yet exist in any of the hospitals in the Valencian Community and will allow, the institute assures, a more precise, efficient and safe surgical approach for the patient. Compared to current 2D imaging tools such as CT or MRI, these models facilitate the location of the lesion or tumor for a better understanding of the pathology.
Biomodels
Biomodels are 3D printed medical models and offer significant value for clinical practice and require the inclusion of materials that realistically reproduce the feel and properties of human tissues.
The new project in which Aimplas works has been financed within the framework of the Aid Program with the co-financing of the ERDF funds of the EU, within the ERDF Operational Program of the Valencian Community 2014-2020, convened by the Resolution of January 14 of 2021, of the executive vice president of the Valencian Innovation Agency (AVI), and aimed at strengthening and developing the Valencian Innovation System to improve the production model for the years 2021 to 2023.
