In the NONTOX project, the different partners will concentrate their efforts on the recovery of plastic materials from WEEE waste
The European Union continues to promote the circular economy model and at the same time increase the recycling rates of plastics. In this sense, the NONTOX project focuses on the elimination of dangerous and unwanted substances from plastic waste that allows converting non-recyclable polymers and waste from the recycling process into new resources.
In the NONTOX project, in which AIMPLAS, the Instituto Tecnológico del Plástico participates, the different partners will concentrate their efforts on the recovery of plastic materials from waste WEEE (Waste from electrical and electronic equipment), ELV (Waste from vehicles at the end of its useful life) and C&D (Construction and Demolition Waste) containing hazardous additives or unwanted compounds such as flame retardants, stabilizers, fillers, etc.
Two innovative and sustainable technologies
To achieve this, two different technologies will be applied (Extruclean and CreaSolv®) capable of eliminating these dangerous substances from plastic waste such as ABS, EPS, PS, HIPS, PE, PP that together represent about half of the demand for plastics in the European Union.
The NONTOX project, funded through the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (GA 820895), is coordinated by the VTT Technical Research Center of Finland and, in addition to AIMPLAS, Fraunhofer, Università degli studi della Campania are also participating in it. Luigi Vanvitelli, Treee, IMDEA Energía Foundation, Stena Recycling International AB, Galea Polymers, ECODOM – Consorzio Italiano per il Recupero e Riciclaggio Elettrodomestici, Norner Research AS, Aalto University and Coolrec.
