Giesecke + Devrient (G + D) and the environmental organization Parley for the Oceans have reached an agreement to produce and market environmentally friendly payment cards. One of the main objectives will be the production of cards from recycling plastic waste from the world’s oceans. With this collaboration, G + D supports its clients so that they can develop their sustainability strategies and promote eco-innovation through their payment solutions.
With this objective in mind, G + D has decided to ally itself with the environmental organization Parley for the Oceans, a movement committed to different actions to raise awareness about the fragility of our oceans and collaborate in the development of projects that stop their destruction. Parley works closely with leading companies in different sectors within the framework of the strategy called AIR, aimed at avoiding plastic whenever possible, intercepting it before it reaches the sea and redesigning materials, methods and products that are as sustainable as possible. Parley also collects plastic waste from the oceans, rivers and beaches for recycling and reuse.
The agreement between G + D and Parley contemplates using raw materials provided by the environmental organization after recycling the waste (granules, bales and plastic flakes), for the production of payment cards by G + D, which will commercialize them under the name Convego Parley Ocean.
Although the agreement is focused on payment cards, the production of other types of products is not ruled out. In addition, G + D and Parley will also work together on the research and development of other alternative environmentally friendly materials. With this, G + D reinforces its environmental strategy, which, beyond its own goal of reducing direct and indirect CO2 emissions by 25% by 2022, also wants to help its customers achieve their sustainability goals.
G + D will offer the new Convego Parley Ocean payment cards to banks and issuers who want to deepen their strategy of social and environmental responsibility. The new generation of customers – in particular, Generation Z – opts for products and services driven by the ecological agenda and that are the result of a genuine commitment to sustainability.
“This is encouraging news for this plastic card that we all have in our hands: It is time to redesign it,” said Cyrill Gutsch, founder and CEO of Parley for the Oceans. “Our collaboration with Giesecke + Devrient puts the Convego Parley Ocean card in the hands of millions of new users and serves as a daily reminder of the power each of us has to change the world, share for share, buy for buy.”
For his part, and according to Carsten Wengel, global head of Sales & Distribution of the smart card business and digital payment security, “consumers are looking for new ways to practice a more sustainable lifestyle and that is why we provide banks with eco-cards. innovative. The cards can be a daily reminder of that commitment and that of your bank to protect the planet ”.
