The initiative comes as part of efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and respond to the growing demand for face masks
Mondi Gronau has a proven history of producing and handling films, laminates, nonwovens and stretch laminates for hygiene products. In order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 this knowledge will be applied in the production of masks.
According to Jürgen Schneider, Managing Director of Mondi Personal Care Components (PCC), the company is ready for the largest production of surgical masks and cast nonwoven fabric.
“Our people have the knowledge and experience necessary to work with these materials and the required technology. Once it is up and running, we will be able to produce more than a million masks per day. “
Given the shortage of cast fabric on the market, Mondi’s Gronau plant will offer approximately 50% of its production to other mask manufacturers in Europe.
Technical details:
- Melt blown nonwoven fabric provides better filtering function than cotton.
- The individual strands of nonwoven fabric are twenty times thinner than a human hair.
- Type IIR surgical masks must meet the following requirements: Bacterial filtration efficiency: 98%, Respiratory resistance: <60.0 Pa / cm 2 and Splash resistance: ≥ 16 kPA.
It should be noted that the correct use of masks prevents the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases. This standard application is commonly used and in the event of a coronavirus health emergency, all people can use it.
It is also important to mention that a standard mask has a lifespan of approximately four hours. According to specialists in the health sector, especially when one is not used to using it and as a first reflex the user touches his face. On the other hand, there are the N95 or KN95 masks that even offer maximum protection.
