The World Plastics Council has welcomed a UN resolution calling for increased efforts to combat marine litter.

Resolution UNEA3 of December 6, of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), concluded that solid waste management should be “the highest priority” in the minimization of waste and the environmentally responsible management of solid waste.

Welcoming the decision, World Plastics Council President Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh said the resolution added to the “rapidly growing global consensus” that investments should be made to improve municipal solid waste management.

According to Al-Fageeh, investment should focus on “emerging economies with large populations near rivers and coasts.”

“Marine debris is a complex and global problem that deserves careful consideration and action by government, scientists and industries working together.
