According to the Second Survey of Plastic Recycling Habits among Mexicans 2024 prepared by Vida Circular, only 24.1% of people indicated that they always or most of the time separate their waste at schools.
The rate of recycled plastics grows year after year in Mexico, but there are still large areas of opportunity to reinforce educational programs and initiatives on environmental issues that can reinforce the separation of waste at home, in work areas and in schools.
According to the results of the Second Survey of Plastic Recycling Habits among Mexicans 2024, carried out by Vida Circular in collaboration with ALPLA and P&G Mexico:
- At the national level, 51.3% of respondents separate their waste at home
- 33.4% do so at work
- 24.1% do so at schools.
The survey identified that 4 out of 10 respondents would like to do more for the environment, but they lack information, which reinforces the importance of continuing to disseminate valuable information through digital platforms, social networks, workshops, campaigns, among others.
In this regard, Romina Dávila, spokesperson for Vida Circular, emphasized that environmental education is a fundamental tool to generate real changes in society. Within the framework of the World Day of Environmental Education, celebrated every January 26, Dávila said:
«At Vida Circular we work to bring information and resources that promote a responsible culture, facilitating actions that become daily habits.»
Environmental education: a driver of sustainable change
Environmental education plays a crucial role in the preservation of the planet. This continuous and permanent process seeks to raise awareness and motivate the population to actively participate in caring for the environment. Here are five key initiatives to promote environmental education and improve waste separation identified by Vida Circular:
1. Take an interest in your environment
Interest in the environment is the first step towards building an environmental culture. Exploring topics such as sustainability, resource conservation and proper waste separation raises awareness about the importance of protecting our environment and making more responsible decisions.
2. Consult specialized sources
Informing yourself through scientific studies, expert publications and practical guides will allow you to better understand environmental challenges and make informed decisions. Accessing reliable information is essential to acting effectively and responsibly.
3. Participate in awareness campaigns
Get involved in campaigns that promote sustainable practices and solutions to environmental problems. These initiatives, disseminated through social networks, the media and community events, seek to generate collective awareness and encourage positive changes in society.
4. Join environmental volunteering activities
Contribute to caring for the environment by participating in activities such as cleaning public spaces, separating waste, restoring natural habitats and promoting recycling. From cities to rural areas, every action counts to build a more sustainable future.
5. Attend environmental education workshops
Training workshops offer practical and theoretical tools to learn about recycling, sustainability and conservation. These activities allow you to understand how your decisions impact the environment and how you can be part of the change.
Education: key to a sustainable future
Everyday decisions, however small they may seem, have a significant impact on protecting the planet. Through environmental education, it is possible to understand the problems we face and the solutions available, allowing us to make more informed and responsible decisions.
By adopting sustainable habits and promoting environmental education, we can all contribute to caring for the environment and ensuring a better future for future generations.
