The initiative is expected to take effect by 2022

The Morelos Congress unanimously approved modifications to the state laws of Ecological Balance and Solid Waste Management, which stipulate the prohibition of buying and selling Styrofoam, plastics, straws and any derivative of petroleum.

The provision will be applied gradually in terms of 12, 18 and 24 months in municipalities with larger, medium and smaller populations; the fines for small businesses, such as shops, pharmacies and greengrocers would be up to 8,500 pesos (99 UMA) and for large businesses, the figure rises to two million pesos.

These measures were promoted by deputies and various NGOs, including “Mi Ciudad Cuerna” and Greenpeace Mexico. In this way, Morelos becomes the 18th entity to modify its laws on issues related to plastic.
